About this product

The classic heart shape, and each of its edges does a different job. The long curved edge follows the jawline and the cheekbone, the notch sits either side of the jaw, the broad flank covers the forehead, and the rounded point works along the brow. It measures 6 mm at the spine and tapers to a smooth edge, which is thick enough to hold cool and thin enough to follow the contour of a face.

Cut and polished by hand from natural nephrite. The edge is the part that matters most and it is finished rather than left sharp, because a gua sha stone with a crisp edge scrapes instead of gliding. Colour and veining vary piece to piece, as quarried stone does.

How to use the gua sha

Gua sha is mostly about angle and anchoring. Get those two right and the rest follows on its own.

Oil first, always
The stone needs something to glide on. Apply facial oil or serum and let it settle. On bare dry skin a gua sha stone drags, and dragging is the one thing you are trying to avoid.
Hold it almost flat
Roughly a fifteen degree angle to the skin rather than upright on the edge. Held upright it scrapes; held flat it glides and the broad part of the edge does the work.
Anchor, then sweep
Place your free hand on the skin at the start of each stroke and draw the stone away from that anchor in one smooth motion. Anchoring is what stops the skin travelling with the stone.
Match the edge to the area
Long curve along the jaw and cheekbone, notch either side of the jaw, broad flank across the forehead, rounded point along the brow and beside the nose.

Should the skin go red?: Not on the face. Facial gua sha is a light, gliding technique. If you are leaving marks, you are pressing far harder than this tool asks for.
Roller or gua sha first?: Either order works. Many people gua sha first for the contour strokes and finish with the roller for an even, cooling pass.
Is the edge sharp?: No, and it should not be. The edge is smoothed deliberately. A crisp edge is a manufacturing shortcut and it scrapes.
